Annual Wellness Bloodwork for Dogs and Cats

"We recommend it every year, every pet." — Dr. Joey Gaines, Chief Veterinary Officer, Omaha Vets Group

Your pet's first adult panel becomes a personal baseline. Each year, we compare new results against it to spot gradual shifts in kidney, liver, or thyroid function well before your pet shows signs of illness. Finding a change early usually means easier treatment and lower costs.

What Our Wellness Panel Includes

Our standard wellness panel is the Total Body Function with SDMA. One blood draw covers:

  • Chemistry panel: kidney and liver function, blood sugar, proteins, and electrolytes
  • Complete blood count (CBC): red cells, white cells, and platelets
  • Thyroid screening: thyroid hormone levels
  • SDMA: an early indicator of kidney function

When Your Pet Needs Bloodwork

Milestone Why it matters
Before spay or neuter Confirms your pet is ready for anesthesia
First birthday Sets your pet's adult baseline
Every year after Tracks changes over time
Before a dental cleaning or surgery Required, with results from the past 3 months

For routine checkups, results from the past 12 months count toward this year's panel.

Bloodwork When Your Pet Is Sick

If your pet is vomiting, losing weight, drinking more than usual, or just not acting like themselves, bloodwork helps us find the cause. Most bloodwork is run right in our in-house lab, along with urinalysis and parasite testing, so you often get answers without an overnight wait. Learn more about our advanced diagnostics.

A Quick, Low-Stress Visit

The blood draw happens during your pet's exam, with no extra appointment needed. For nervous pets, your veterinarian may suggest calming supplements and a return visit. If a value needs a second look, the recheck is typically a short technician appointment.

Bloodwork is available at Aspen Creek, Cottner Creek, Coventry, Ridgeview (extended hours), Skyline, The Ridge, Valley, and Walnut Creek. View all locations, hours, and directions.

Proudly serving pet families in Omaha, Elkhorn, Papillion, Valley, Bellevue, and nearby communities.

Pet Bloodwork FAQs

How Much Does Pet Bloodwork Cost?
Cost depends on the panel your pet needs. Call your clinic for current pricing, or ask about Pet Prime®, which includes annual bloodwork with exams, vaccines, and preventatives for one predictable payment.
Should My Pet Fast Before Bloodwork?
Yes, when possible. We recommend an 8-hour fast for routine screening bloodwork, since food can affect certain bloodwork values. If your pet takes medication or has diabetes, call us before fasting.
Is the Blood Draw Hard on My Pet?
Most pets handle it well. It's a quick draw of a small sample by our trained team, and we offer extra support for anxious pets.
How Soon Will I Get Results?
Most bloodwork is run in our in-house lab, so results come back quickly. If a test needs an outside lab, your team will tell you when to expect results.
